Classic Italian Sandwiches at La Bella Sangweech in Toronto

Located on College Street in Toronto’s historic Little Italy, La Bella Sangweech opened its doors in February 2024. Rather than reinvent the wheel, the retail storefront of the cocktail bar Last Call opted to create the best version of the classic Italian sandwich possible.

Popular selections include the Gabagool, which combines spiced and cured capicola with roasted red peppers, provolone, and Bella Sauce (a take on a Dijon vinaigrette). The name is a humorous nod to Tony Soprano’s Americanized pronunciation of capicola, a type of Italian ham. The premium cured product features a healthy 70/30 lean-to-fat ratio from the muscle that runs from the pig’s neck to the fourth rib. It connects the capo (head) with the shoulder (collo), called the capicola.

Another local favorite is the La Mortadella Di Fame, which pairs traditional Italian lunch meat with house-made truffle aïoli and arugula salad. A stracciatella, a rich, creamy cheese from the Apulia region, pulls the elements together. La Godmother packs a spicy punch with sun-dried tomatoes, stracciatella, Genoa salami, and soppressata or minced pork seasoned with dried chili peppers, red wine, black peppercorns, and salt.
